Each year, the Leaders in Ethics and Academic Discipline (LEAD) student group organizes and hosts a High School Ethics Case Competition at the College of Business. High schools from the Chicago area and elsewhere send student teams to Barsema Hall to participate. The competition format mirrors the intercollegiate competitions LEAD students participate in at the University of Arizona and elsewhere.
High school teams are sent an ethics case several weeks before the competition. The case usually describes an ethical dilemma in the business world whose resolution is unclear. Teams are asked to act as consultants hired by the company to solve the problem. They are expected to research the problem and develop a recommendation, taking ethical, economic, environmental, legal and other considerations into account. The teams present their recommendations to a panel of judges at NIU who pose follow-up questions to test the teams’ logic. Judges are typically NIU faculty and alumni. They assign scores to each presentation and a winning team is chosen.
LEAD is the student group that supports BELIEF. LEAD students meet weekly with the BELIEF Director throughout the school year. LEAD procures speakers for Huskie Ethics Awareness Talks (HEAT) several times each semester. They also organize and run the NIU High School Ethics Case Competition and participate in intercollegiate ethics case competitions, including the Eller competition at the University of Arizona and the Templeton competition at Stetson University.
